Facts About Belle Meade, TN

Located in Davidson County, Belle Meade is home to more than 2,900 people. While part of the Nashville and Davidson County metropolitan government, the city continues to operate with its own city hall, police force, and regulations.

The beginnings of the city date back to 1807, when John Harding moved from Virginia to the area. He purchased 250 acres on the Natchez Trace that included the Dunham Station log cabin. He dubbed the property Belle Meade, which is said to mean beautiful meadow in French.

The property remained in the Harding family’s possession until the early 20th century. It was purchased by the Belle Meade Land Company, which set out to develop the area. The original Harding mansion was preserved and became a historic site in 1969.

The community was absorbed into the Nashville and Davidson County municipal government in 1963, while retaining much of the infrastructure that was already in place. A number of properties are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including homes that have been added since 2004.

More than a thousand people over the age of 60 make their homes in Belle Meade. Of that number, 135 live in single-person households and could make use of home care services. 345 people over 60 are in homes that contain two or more people in that age bracket. 8 households with non-related residents are found within the city.
